John Markowitz, M.D. received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Columbia University and did his psychiatric residency at the Payne Whitney Clinic, New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He subsequently joined the faculty at Cornell, where he had the fortune to receive training in IPT from the late Gerald L. Klerman, M.D. He has focused his subsequent career at Cornell and now Columbia Universities on outcome research, comparing psychotherapies (particularly IPT) and medications as treatments for major depression and dysthymic disorder, and studying IPT as a treatment for depressive subpopulations, for borderline personality disorder, and most recently posttraumatic stress disorder. He has received numerous grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, NARSAD, and other foundations, published numerous books including several IPT manuals, and received the Gerald L. Klerman Young Investigator Award from the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association and Gerald L. Klerman Senior Investigator Award from the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. He is also a member of the ISIPT Executive Council.
