Dr. Waqar Waheed
I’m a clinical associate professor in the University of Calgary Department of Psychiatry. I’ve trained in general psychiatry (Vanderbilt University), child and adolescent psychiatry (Johns Hopkins Hospital), forensic psychiatry (New York Medical College) and addiction medicine (through New York University and the American Society of Addiction Medicine). I am also board certified in Psychosomatic medicine and Neuropsychiatry.
At the Alberta Children’s Hospital I work as the medical director and staff psychiatrist of the psychiatry inpatient program. Another activity is as the educational director for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in child and adolescent psychiatry at Alberta Children’s Hospital. Additional time is spent with the Forensic Adolescent Program as a consultant psychiatrist for competence/fitness to stand trial, criminal responsibility and other court-ordered assessments and treatment.
Some research interests include pharmacotherapy of mood/anxiety disorders and disruptive behavior disorders, competence and criminal responsibility assessment of juvenile offenders and approaches to assessment and management of adolescent violence and sexual offenders.
