John Fernandes MDCM FRCSC FRCPC – Chief of Laboratory Medicine, Hamilton Health Sciences

 
Fernandes received his MDCM from McGill University (MU) in 1982.  After a year of general practice in Sault Ste. Marie he returned to MU for a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  He practiced OB/GYN for nine and a half years in Thunder Bay.  In 1997 he began a residency in General Pathology at U of T, followed by a fellowship in Forensic Pathology in Virginia at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia (completed in 2002).  Dr. Fernandes has been a forensic pathologist at the Hamilton Regional Forensic Pathology Unit, and has previously hheld the position of Medical Director in 2009.  Dr. Fernandes is certified in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and in General Pathology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and was granted “Founder” designation in Forensic Pathology.  He is an Associate Professor and Residency Director for Forensic Pathology at McMaster University. Dr. Fernandes is currently Chief of Laboratory Medicine at the Hamilton Health Sciences.

Lili-Naz Hazrati (MD, PhD, FRCPC)

Dr. Hazrati is a neuropathologist at the Hospital for Sick Children and a clinician scientist at the Sickkids Research Institute in Toronto.  She obtained her PhD in neurobiology at Laval University followed by postdoctoral training at Yale University.  She completed her medical training at the University of Montreal and residency training in neuropathology at the University of Toronto.  Her interest and focus of research are molecular mechanisms underlying long-term effects of mild traumatic brain injury in pediatric and adult populations.


Dr. Andrew Healey MD RDCS RDMS FRCPC

Originally from Newfoundland, Andrew attended medical school at Memorial University in Newfoundland and went on to specialty training in Emergency Medicine, Echocardiography, and Critical Care Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton.  Andrew completed the International Master in Donation of Organs, Tissues, and Cells for Transplantation at the Universitat de Bracelona in Spain and is the Chief Medical Officer for Donation at Trillium Gift of Life Network.  He practices emergency medicine at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at McMaster University.  He is the Division Head and Medical Director for the Division of Critical Care Medicine at William Osler Health System in Etobicoke and Brampton where he practices Adult ICU.  Four amazing children and a loving, supportive wife is the secret to his success!

Chris Milroy MBChB MD LLB BA LLM FRCPath FFFLM  FRCPC Founder in Forensic Pathology DMJ – Director  of the Eastern Ontario Regional Forensic Pathology Unit

Dr. Milroy is a Forensic Pathologist/Coroner  based in Ottawa where he is Director of the Eastern Ontario Regional Forensic Pathology Unit and Full Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He qualified in Medicine from the University of Liverpool (MBChB, MD) and in Law from the University of London (LLB, LLM). He also has a BA in Philosophy from London. He is a Fellow of the UK Royal College of Pathologists, The Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, where he is Chief Examiner in Forensic Pathology.  He has worked as a full time Forensic Pathologist in the UK and Canada for 27 years and has published over 100 articles and chapters.


Dr. Eric Morgen MD MPH FRCPC

Dr. Morgen completed his clinical fellowship training in perinatal and placental pathology at Mount Sinai Hospital and the University of Toronto in 2016. He is now a staff perinatal pathologist and assistant professor at the same institutions, as well a registered pathologist with the OFPS. Dr. Morgen has research interests relating to the use of placental pathology and blood markers to predict pregnancy outcomes.

Dr. Joseph A. Prahlow, MD

Dr. Prahlow is a Forensic Pathologist who currently is a Deputy Medical Examiner for numerous Michigan counties and is employed by Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine in Kalamazoo, MI, where he is a Professor and Vice Chair within the Department of Pathology. Prior to arriving in Kalamazoo, he completed 16 years of service as a forensic pathologist at the South Bend Medical Foundation and as a faculty member at Indiana University School of Medicine – South Bend at the University of Notre Dame, in South Bend, Indiana.

He received his undergraduate education at Valparaiso University (Indiana), attended medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine, completed his pathology residency at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and participated in a forensic pathology fellowship at the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. He is Board-Certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic, Clinical, and Forensic Pathology. His professional interests include teaching as well as presenting and publishing forensic pathology research. He has published over100 peer-reviewed papers in medical/scientific journals and nearly 20 book chapters in various forensic textbooks/publications. Dr. Prahlow was an assistant editor for the second edition of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Handbook of Forensic Pathology (2003) and editor of the CAP’s Basic Competencies in Forensic Pathology. In 2010, he published a textbook entitled Forensic Pathology for Police, Death Investigators, Attorneys, and Forensic Scientists. More recently, Dr. Prahlow collaborated with world-renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Roger Byard of Australia on a forensic pathology atlas. Dr. Prahlow has presented research at numerous national meetings, and he has been an invited speaker to a variety of local, state, national, and international meetings. During his career, he has received numerous teaching awards. Dr. Prahlow is active in a number of professional organizations, including the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME), the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), the College of American Pathologists, and the American Society for Clinical Pathology. He is a past Chairman of the Pathology/Biology Section within the AAFS, and served as President (2007) and Chairman of the Board (2008) of NAME. In his free time, Dr. Prahlow enjoys family life with his wife. They are the proud parents of 5 children, 3 of whom are married. They recently became grandparents.

Brian Schwartz Vice-President, Science and Health Protection at Public Health Ontario

In this capacity he provides executive leadership for science and public health protection programs including: infection prevention and control, environmental and occupational health, and communicable diseases, emergency preparedness and response.
Dr. Schwartz has served as scientific advisor to the Emergency Management branch of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and held the position of vice-chair of Ontario’s SARS Scientific Advisory Committee. He also chaired the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Scientific Response Team during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Dr. Schwartz practiced emergency medicine for over 30 years in both community and academic settings, as well as held the position of Director of Sunnybrook Osler Centre for PreHospital Care from 1996-2009. He has been published extensively and has received many awards for clinical and academic excellence in emergency and family medicine; he currently holds an associate professor position at the University of Toronto in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Dr. Schwartz received his medical degree from the University of Toronto where he also received his master of science in community health. Schwartz received his certification in emergency medicine from and is a fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Dr. Ty Turner MD CFPC RCPSC

Dr. Turner graduated from Queens medical school in 1971. After working as a Toronto GP for 10 years, in 1982, he was asked by a health minister to lead the development of a province wide patient advocacy program for mentally ill persons. The program still continues 35 years later as the Psychiatric Patient Advocate Office. Later he became a psychiatrist and was chief of psychiatry at the former Toronto Doctors’ Hospital and, until 2009, St Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto.
He has served on various ministerial advisory committees, and was the President of the Association of General Hospital Psychiatric Services, always advocating for expanded access to mental health services.
Now he has returned to front line psychiatry working in underserved areas in Northern Ontario and with homeless persons in inner city Toronto, under the auspices of St Michael’s Hospital.
Over the past twenty five years, he has added Mindfulness to both his personal and professional practice.


Dr. David Williams, BSc., MD, MHSc, FRCPS

Dr. David Williams has been appointed as the province’s new Chief Medical Officer of Health, effective February 16, 2016. Since July 1, 2015, Dr. Williams returned to this position as the Interim Chief Medical Officer of Health for the province of Ontario, having been the Medical Officer of Health for the Thunder Bay District Board of Health from October 2011 to June 30, 2015. Prior to that, Dr. Williams held the position of Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health, Infectious Disease and Environmental Health Branch Director at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care from 2005 to 2011. During this time he was also the Acting Chief Medical Officer of Health for Ontario from November 2007 to June of 2009. Prior to working at the province, Dr. Williams was the Medical Officer of Health and CEO for the Thunder Bay District Health Unit from 1991 to 2005. Dr. Williams is a four time graduate of the University of Toronto receiving his BSc., MD, Masters in Community Health and Epidemiology (MHSc) and Fellowships in Community Medicine/Public Health and Preventive Medicine (FRCPS). Prior to entering public health, Dr. Williams practiced hospital based clinical practice as a GP and GP Anaesthetist at the Sioux Lookout Zone Hospital and also in International Health at the United Mission to Nepal Mission Hospital, Tansen Nepal.
