Huyer

Dirk Huyer MD

Dirk Huyer MD was appointed Chief Coroner for Ontario in March 2014. Dr. Huyer received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1986. He has served as a coroner in Ontario since 1992 and most recently served as Regional Supervising Coroner for the Regions of Peel and Halton, as well as the Counties of Simcoe and Wellington. He has been involved in over 5,000 coroner’s investigations.

Dr. Huyer has specific expertise in the medical evaluation of child maltreatment, and has worked with the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Program at the Hospital for Sick Children. Dr. Huyer is the Chair of both the Deaths Under Five and Paediatric Death Review committees of the Office of the Chief Coroner. He is also an Assistant Professor with the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto.


Pollanen

Michael S. Pollanen is the Chief Forensic Pathologist for Ontario, Canada and a Professor and Vice-Chair (Innovation) of LaboratoryMedicine and Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. He graduated from the University of Toronto with an MD (1999) and PhD (1995) and completed his residency in 2003. His duties include supervising and directing the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (7000 autopsies/year), conducting autopsy (>2500 autopsies conducted to date), testifying in court (>250 court testimonies to date), and directing academic activities in forensic pathology at the University of Toronto. Professor Pollanen’s main educational focus is training forensic pathologists and strengthening forensic capacity in the Global South. He has been involved in case work or forensic missions in: East Timor, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Haiti, Thailand, Jamaica, Iraq, and Bermuda. His current research interests include Nodding syndrome in Uganda and the pathology of torture. He has published over 100 papers in peer- reviewed journals. Professor Pollanen is a member of the forensic advisory board of the International Committee of the Red Cross and is the immediate Past President of the International Association of Forensic Science (2015-17). He is a Founder of Forensic Pathology in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is also a Deputy Chief Coroner in Ontario.

Martin Chicilo MA PGD BA BED AICB AMP

Director of Operations for the Office of the Chief Coroner (OCC) & Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OFPS)

Martin joined us from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, Saskatchewan Region, where he held the position of Director, Corporate Services. Martin has broad financial management, strategic planning and controllership expertise having held executive positions in the credit union system and federal government including Health Canada, Western Economic Diversification Canada and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada. He has extensive Board of Director experience and training with civic and non-profit boards focusing on business startups, community investment and affordable housing. He worked on economic development projects to support the National Center of Synchrotron Research and construction of the Saskatchewan Centre for Cyclotron Sciences and vaccine and anti-infective compound research at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization.
