Creating the background picture- what makes CPD effective?

Session 1 will examine and discuss the components necessary for effective CPD. We will discuss recent evidence that identifies strategies that will ensure program effectiveness in terms of likely change in practice. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss how their current programs may benefit from implementing recommended strategies.

  • Session 2
    Contributing fields to CPD

Learning is complex. Session 2 will address disciplines that contribute important keys to narrowing the gap between the acquisition of new knowledge and skills and their successful application to practice. You will have the opportunity to discuss highlights of adult learning principles, the contribution of Knowledge Translation , Change Theory and the most recent movement in CPD towards Quality Improvement.

  • Session 3
    Choosing a planning model

In this Session we will take a close look at 3 different planning models: A basic program planning model, the Kern model, and the Logic model of learning outcomes. Each will be discussed in terms of their benefits and drawbacks giving you a clear sense of what works best when. We will also discuss approaches needed to develop programs that move beyond “one off” sessions to a more longitudinal approach.

  • Session 4
Getting to know what your learners need and want to know

We focus on demystifying learning needs and how to go about determining what the target audience may need vs. what they may want to learn. Determining learning needs and translating them in a way your audience can see their relevance is a key aspect of creating and sustaining motivation to learn. You will have the opportunity to discuss the difference between gap analysis and learning needs assessments , identify available methodologies and determine which methods are most appropriate for differing educational purposes.

  • Session 5
Step 1 in making sure your CPD achieves results

We will explore what is needed to achieve desired learning outcomes from CPD programming. First we will identify 4 domains of learning into which outcomes fall. We will discuss the difference between goals and objectives and the criteria that are used to assess their usefulness. Everyone will have the chance to practice writing and evaluating several learning outcome statements.

  • Session 6
    Step 2 Program design

Take learning outcomes one step further by connecting learning domains and choice of methods. Each domain is best suited to different approaches. Clarity on this makes program design straightforward and relatively easy. Different methodologies as well as their advantages and disadvantages will be discussed. Based on a case, you will be encouraged to experiment with designing a program and discussing anticipated challenges.

  • Session 7
    How well did we do?

Session 7 walks into methods of determining program effectiveness and learning outcomes. Differing levels of evaluation will be discussed as will the methods and resources required.

  • Session 8
Do we “make the mark?” Navigating accreditation

Make the connection between accreditation standards established by various colleges and the action required to meet those standards.

  • Session 9
    Enhancing Interprofessional CPD

In this session we will explore how CPD can advance interprofessional learning and collaboration. As CPD moves to the workplace setting, we will examine how team-based learning can be used to improve interprofessional collaboration and patient outcomes. Finally, we will discuss how patient engagement in CPD can positively impact health professions education.

  • Session 10
    Future Trends in CPD

Round off this series by exploring current and future trends in CPD. This is important information for CPD professionals. You will be able to list resources for continuing your own CPD in the field as well as discuss the impact of technology and social networking on the field.
