Nova Scotia Health Authority Program

Welcome

Understanding the non-opioid options available to manage pain and when to implement opioid therapy is key.

The Nova Scotia Health Authority, in partnership with the University of Toronto (UofT) and Saegis, a subsidiary of the Canadian Medical Protective Association company, is pleased to offer a four-part program Safer Opioid Prescribing.

The program is delivered through three evening webinars and one in-person skill development workshop taking place in Dartmouth.

About the Program

The UofT’s Safer Opioid Prescribing is one of the first educational programs in the country to offer a curriculum that reflects the Canadian Guideline for Opioids for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain released in May 2017.

The webinar series was created to help physicians acquire knowledge and learn new skills in the field of pain management, especially in the area of chronic non-cancer pain. Throughout the series, physicians will:

  • Develop multi-modal approaches to complex chronic pain,
  • Learn how to initiate and manage safe and effective opioid therapy,
  • Prevent and address addiction to prescription opioids, and
  • Develop communication and collaboration practice skills to better manage opioid therapy for chronic pain patients.

Upon completion of the webinars participants will take part in a skill development workshop, a small group problem based learning that builds on the knowledge and expertise from the webinars. Physicians will develop collaborative and practical skills to manage challenges around opioid prescribing and addressing addiction.
