Go Beyond the Basics of Educating in an Online Environment

The previous year demonstrated the need for nearly all professions to have a solid grasp of technical skills as a result of the global pandemic. Those working in education were required to quickly transition to teaching in an online environment. This shift has made the need for expertise in utilizing education technology essential in today’s teaching environment.

CPD’s new Teaching with Technology certificate program offers a 16 week, 40 hour accredited program designed to help enhance your digital skill set for teaching using education technology. Going beyond the basics of educating in an online environment, this program will help you learn how to effectively integrate online pedagogical design into successful teaching.

  • Form international collaborations to disseminate your work and assist with your promotion
  • Explore a range of online tools and techniques: Zoom, Twitter, Padlet, Flipgrid
  • Develop a mini portfolio: website, video, infographic, synchronous teaching, and more
  • Build a national and international presence using social platforms

Delivered entirely online, this program will start on February 9th and will run for 16 weeks with sessions held every Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. ET until June 8th.

This digital certificate program is open to domestic and international learners. Healthcare Educators (Physicians, Clinicians, Nurses), Healthcare Administrators, and Interprofessional Educators are encouraged to register.

Strengthening the Patient-Practitioner Relationship with Narrative-Based Medicine

Knowingly, and unknowingly, many stories are told in medicine–a patient tells a story about their symptom or concern and their practitioner responds with a remedy and treatment plan, creating a narrative. Understanding how to listen, give feedback, and ultimately gain insight from reflection, more effectively addresses patients’ needs and concerns, and thereby practitioner fulfillment.

Offered by CPD, the Narrative-Based Medicine program starting this January, is the only certificate of its kind in Canada. This unique program focuses on developing narrative-based medicine skills: closing reading, reflective writing, listening and communication skills.

Over a 6-month period through 8 sessions, participants will learn to:

  • Develop reflective and creative writing skills through tailored practical exercises
  • Gain one-on-one editing, guidance, and mentorship from a prize-winning author
  • Cover the theory and practice of narrative-based medicine through expert guest speakers and readings
  • Engage in a small group seminar format which encourages interaction, collaboration and teamwork

There are two cohorts offered for this program and demand has already filled the Thursday cohort starting on January 21st. Limited spots remain open for the Tuesday cohort starting on January 19th. Sessions for this cohort will be held the third Tuesday of every month from 6-8:30 p.m. ET until June 15, 2021.

This digital certificate program is open to domestic and international learners across all disciplines.

Happy Holidays!

As the year comes to an end, we are reminded to slow down and appreciate our family, friends, and all that we have accomplished over the last several months.

Here at CPD, 2020 started off with several successful programs and conferences such as the Cardiovascular-Diabetes Symposium and Update in Emergency Medicine, to name a few. Faculty and staff colleagues also attended the 2020 Annual Meeting of the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education (SACME) in Miami, Florida, holding a strong representation of CPD in both the peer-reviewed academic workshops as well as oral and poster presentations.

In March, the entire world was taken by surprise with the COVID-19 pandemic. The launch of the COVID-19 Resource Library—a hub for clinical resources—was swiftly created in the early weeks of the pandemic. This tool assisted health care professionals in acquiring various credible sources in learning new skills, adapting to the situation at hand, and with coping mechanisms during this difficult time.

To adapt to the physical distancing measures, CPD transitioned from in-person events to an online learning environment with all programs and conferences being offered on a digital platform. This allowed us to extend our reach to an international audience while safely connecting with learners. CPD continues to offer interactive and engaging online programming going into the new year helping our learners stay up to date and learn new skills in their areas of practice.

As we move into the holiday season and the new year, we look forward to the endless possibilities of digital learning that will be experienced in the years to come.

From everyone at CPD, we wish you and your loved ones a peaceful holiday season and health and happiness for the new year.

Happy Holidays!

Canada’s Largest Indigenous Health Conference Highlights Youth this December

Health care professionals play a critical role in advocating for the improved status of individuals, families, and communities. As these workers engage with different populations, they need the knowledge on the practices, health issues and barriers that may jeopardize optimal outcomes. The Indigenous Health Conference (IHC) provides one such forum.

The 4th biennial IHC will be held online from December 3-5, 2020 and will have a focus on youth mental health and cultivating youth as agents of change and future leaders in healthcare for Indigenous communities.

In this new digital format, participants will hear from some of the best academic minds and community partners working in Indigenous health. Speakers will include:

Michèle Audette, Commissioner, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls
Topic: Systematic racism

Pitta Irniq, Inuit Elder
Topic: Words of wisdom for youth

Carrie Bourassa, Scientific Director of CIHR, Institute of Indigenous People’s health
Topic: The importance of research in improving the lives of Indigenous peoples

In addition to hearing from knowledgeable and dynamic speakers, networking opportunities and a job fair promoting employment opportunities for health professionals nationally in Indigenous and underserved communities will also be part of the online experience.

Through creating dialogue with Indigenous health experts, policy makers and health care providers, this conference provides an opportunity to improve health care and advocacy for Indigenous peoples in Canada. Join us as we discuss the huge health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and explore potential solutions to reduce the gaps.
